Train Operating Company - Building an Internal Data Function from Scratch
Pete Williams (Director of Data @ Penguin Random House and Episode 7 guest of The Data Files podcast) recently lent his vast experience to a train operating company who were looking to build out their own internal data capability. He was able to lend a friendly and constructive ear to them to listen to what they want to achieve and to offer hindsight on his own experiences to help them build a picture of how best to apply those learnings.
Challenge:
- How do we create effective metadata management?
- Advice on how to build a 'data academy' internally to grow capability and skillsets.
- Aligning our work with data to help achieve business outcomes.
Feedback & Outcomes:
- "The chance to talk with someone and bounce ideas around is so helpful."
- "There's 3 or 4 things from this I'm going to put into action straight away."
